Try it. Love it. Sweat it out.

I know many of you are scared of trying a dance focused class. I have heard every excuse, but I am telling you it is the BEST workout. It is the best workout IF you let yourself FREE.  When some people hear the word dance they freeze up. Whenever I get a new student to enter my dance class I tell them to let go, not to judge themselves, and to dance their heart out. WHO CARES if you are moving the wrong way, WHO CARES if you have no idea what is going on in class. No one is there to judge, we are all there for the same reason; to sweat, smile, and leave happy. The more at ease you are, the better your workout will be. Two Boston Health and Fitness Bloggers took their first ZUMBA class with me. I think you will find what they have to say interesting!

Sometimes it's more fun working out with a buddy

It's a rare opportunity when my fiance lets me "Work him out". I usually hear him say "no, I have soccer tomorrow"  or "no, I went to the gym yesterday" or just plain old "not a chance". So on the VERY FEW AND RARE occasions that he says "YES" I get so excited I could pee myself!

Yesterday was one of those "YES" days. So I set up two mats, took out some light weights for arms and back. and grabbed a kickball for abs. Most of the exercises I put him through I modified for myself. We did a lot of plank and push up variations. I made sure to throw in some back work to even us out. The workout was under 25 minutes and we were both sweaty! It was so much fun.. for me at least!

I find that working out with someone can be motivating and just more fun. I once worked out with a friend who is also a trainer. We set out two mats and I put her through an exercise and she put me through one. We did this for about 30 minutes back and fourth. We both learned some new moves and the workout flew by! Try it and let me know how it goes. Instead of a dinner date, it can be a workout date! YEAH?! OR workout while dinner is cooking! HOLLA.

Here is an old workout video we did together.  I plan to do another video demonstrating what we did yesterday, because it was amazing. I am sore from it today!

My favorite homemade halloween costumes

I LOVE homemade costumes. They are fun, different  and I appreciate them far more than any store bought one. Sometimes we do not have enough time to make our costumes, but if you do... you need to try these! Tea Bag costume:

I used this costume 3 years in a row! It was a fave of mine because I was comfortable and warm! It also got a lot of attention.  I went to a craft store to buy all the supplies, and I gathered leaves from my parents backyard. These are the directions that I followed:

For my teabag costume, I purchased a few yards of Crinoline, a couple yards of cording and a box of Lipton teabags. I cut out two huge rectangles the same size. I then laid one on top of the other and sewed the sides and bottom.

Open up the top and fill about 1/3 with dried leaves. Fold the top in on both corners making a point and fold down like the top of a teabag.

Cut off the top of the teabag box and shape like the paper tag of a teabag. Hot melt glue to 1 yrd of the cording and then sew the cord to the top of the bag.

I made two complete bags and attached them with fabric straps at the top so that I could just throw it over my head.

It was a big hit at the doctor's office I work at on Halloween! We always dress up! I wasn't just any old bag lady, I was a tea bag lady!

I wore a long sleeve black shirt, black tights and black shorts under it and carried a teapot and large strainer

Jelly Bean Bag- I made this costume all by myself and I was in 5th grade. So I am pretty sure you can handle it...unless you are a baby reading my blog. It was easy and AWESOME! Not the best picture of the costume. I am all the way on the right.

Directions:

  • Blow up ask many little colorful balloons as you can. Do not pass out!
  • Buy a STURDY clear plastic garbage bag.
  • You will also need ribbon to tie the top of the bag

Cut leg holes at the bottom of the garbage bag, slide yourself in the bag.  Add as many colorful balloons in the bag to make them look like jelly beans!  Tie the opening of the bag around your shoulders or neck and you are a jelly bean bag.

And Last year I was a SUSHI ROLL !

I also went to a  fabric store for this costume and I bought:

Shiny (cheap) silk kinda material for the raw "salmon"

White stick tape for the lines in the salmon

I got this amazing material that looked like seaweed and wrapped it around the salmon

Directions:

Wear all white

Make a pillow with the salmon color fabric. Stuff with cheap stuffing and sew it up. I can not sew for the life of me, but somehow I made it work. You want to create diagonal lines on the salmon with the tape. This is what really made it look like a piece of raw fish! Wrap the pillow around you with the seaweed looking material.

The final touch: I took a headband and attached material that I made look like Ginger and wasabi paste. Finally, I stuck chopsticks in my hair. FUN. Easy. AND SO CHEAP!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOMEMADE COSTUME? I still need idea for this Halloween!! Help!

And I leave you with this fun Halloween video!

Black Bean Hummus, make your own at home!

photo (28)

Its easy! We know that hummus is made from ground chickpeas... so how hard can this be, right? I did not have tahini so this is a tahini free hummus. The only thing is that you need a food processor. Mine is about 40 years old, probably. It was my grandmas and she gave it to me, but it works like a charm! Cuisinart, baby!

* Tahini is roasted sesame seed paste. It is actually really good.

Ingredients:

1 can black beans

1 can garbanzo beans

2 garlic cloves (you can do one if you do not love garlic)

1 jalapeño pepper (mine was spicy- so do a half or none if you do not like "heat")

half  lemon

1/4 cup water

2 tablespoon EVOO

cumin, salt, pepper to taste (I didn't measure I  just kinda added it in)

Directions:

Add all ingredients to food processor, blend until smooth. I made sure to mince the garlic and Jalapaneo pepper before I put in blender.  If the final product looks too thick add more water and blend again. Enjoy with carrot sticks, or pita chips.

Steps to a beautiful back

Video 1: pulling your shoulders back

1. Good Posture! What is good posture?  I used to think it was just when you would sit up straight (that is part of it) but the REAL posture comes from pulling your shoulder blades together and pulling your shoulders away from your ears and back. When you pull your shoulders back, make sure not to stick out your rib cage or your belly. Good posture also comes from pulling your stomach in, engaging your deep abdominal muscles and supporting your low back.  Now I want you to FREEZE and check the placement of your head. It is most likely hanging too far font and putting a lot of strain on your neck and shoulders. Try to stack and lengthen your spine and not let your head fall too far front. Now pull your shoulders down and back and check out video #1.

Video 2: back work on your stomach (soon to be mama's ...I would not do this)

2. This is a GREAT back exercise and routine. It's all about pulling the shoulders back, baby. Do not let them fall front. Think of sliding your shoulder blades down and away from your ears, and then pulling them together.

Video 3: seated rows (make sure you are sitting up tall)

3. Seated rows: AMAZING. You can do this at home, no big machines needed! All you need is a resistance band. Many people focus too much on pulling their elbows back, when the focus should be on your shoulders and shoulder blades.

Video 4: Standing posture workout

4. Standing arm workout! Focus on triceps and back. This workout is a MUST! And you can do it anywhere... even when waiting in line at the grocery store...maybe??!

I am also guilty of bad posture, slouchy shoulders, and just too tired to care.

BUT 90% of the time I am aware, I make that effort, and it has paid off. You can do it too. Set yourself a reminder on your computer or your phone. " Pull your shoulders back" or "posture".  This change will make you taller, appear learner, and will for sure give off that confident and successful vibe.

What is YOUR favorite back exercise? I would love to hear!
